Take Your Pet to Work Week

Founded by Pet Sitters International, the goal of this themed week is to highlight the many benefits of having pets and promote adoptions of cats and dogs everywhere.

During the pandemic, animal shelters reported a huge upswing in adoption numbers. Hopefully that momentum continues as people go back to work.

Take Your Cat to Work Day® & Take Your Dog to Work Day®

Take Your Pet to Work Week® takes place Monday, June 22, 2020 to Friday, June 26, 2020. It’s bookended by Take Your Cat to Work Day® on Monday, June 22 and Take Your Dog to Work Day® on Friday, June 26.

Participating in Take Your Pet to Work Week®

With so many people still working from home, this year it’s easier than ever to participate in Take Your Pet to Work Week®. For many of us, our pets are now our coworkers!

If your office has safely reopened and you decide to take your cat or dog to work, here are some tips to make it a positive experience for your pet and your colleagues:

  • Get permission from management first
  • Find out if any co-workers are allergic, afraid of, or opposed to you bringing your pet to work. Cat allergies are twice as likely as dog allergies.
  • Be sure your pet is comfortable being transported in a carrier and spending time at a different location. Sometimes virtual visits are best!
  • Pack your pet’s things, including food, a water bowl, and toys. Cats will need a litter box and cat carrier, while dogs will need a harness and leash.
  • Keep your pet close. This may mean keeping your office door closed or keeping your pet on a leash.
  • Never, under any circumstance, leave your pet alone in a vehicle while you work.
  • Have a plan in place in case your pet shows signs of stress and needs to go home.

If you know your pet is unlikely to enjoy their time at the office, invite them to your next virtual meeting instead. You can reward them with a treat if they're good. It's the pet equivalent to getting a raise!
