If you have kept a close ear to recent news, you’ve probably already heard of the General Data Protection Regulation coming into effect this month in the European Union. The GDPR, as it’s commonly known, is the most important change in data privacy regulation in the last 20 years and will significantly affect how businesses are obligated to handle, process and store the personal data collected from EU citizens.
With only a few more days to go until the May 25, 2018 deadline, we are thrilled to announce that VidCruiter is officially compliant with all GDPR requirements.
It is important to note the scope of these new regulations extends far beyond the EU. It needs to be taken seriously by any company, whether based in Europe or abroad, that intends to do business within the borders of the EU.
What Is The GDPR And How Does it Affect You?
The GDPR represents a long overdue update to the existing privacy legislation, the Data Protection Directive, established in 1995. It aims to protect EU citizens from privacy and data breaches in a manner that reflects the new realities of an increasingly data-driven world. Ultimately, the goal is to give consumers more control over their personal information as it is collected by companies they engage with online.
To summarize, the GDPR applies to all companies that process the data of EU residents, which includes organisations and non-EU companies that offer goods or services to EU citizens. The new legislation will greatly strengthen the rights of individuals with regard to their personal data and how it is handled by the companies. Going forward, individuals will have the right to demand companies reveal and/or delete the personal data it holds on them, and consent will now have to be explicit and informed. The price to pay for non-compliance is not an easy pill to swallow, with new maximum penalties reaching an unprecedented €20M, or 4% of a company’s global revenue, whichever is greater.
